Information and reservations: telephone 091 605.32.67, visiteguidate@teatromassimo.it History: Even before the unification of Italy, people spoke of Palermo’s need for a new, spacious and modern opera house. In 1859, the Piazza Marina area had been identified as the site for the new building, which was to be named after Ferdinand II of Bourbon. After annexation to the Kingdom of Italy, the city council instead identified an area near Porta Maqueda, proceeding to expropriate land on which three churches and as many monasteries stood: the Church and Monastery of the Stigmata, the Church and Monastery of San Giuliano, and the Church of Sant’Agata, built on the site that was said to have been the home of Saint Agatha. Tradition has it that a nun known as “la monachella”, whose tomb was said to have been desecrated during construction, still wanders through the theatre. On 10 September 1864, Mayor Antonio Starabba, Marquis of Rudinì, who had succeeded Mariano Stabile, announced a competition “to remedy the lack of a theatre commensurate with the population’s growing civilisation and needs”, open to Italian and foreign architects. The deadline was set for 9 September 1866, then extended by six months for various reasons, “among which, besides the importance and scale of the project, not least is the imminence of the war [the Third Italian War of Independence], in which some of the distinguished competing artists will take part”. There were 35 participants, twelve of them foreign. The judging panel was chaired by Gottfried Semper, the architect who designed the Semperoper in Dresden and was then engaged in creating Vienna’s Ringstrasse. On 4 September 1868, the jury drew up the ranking of the five prizewinners, awarding first prize to Giovan Battista Filippo Basile, a renowned architect from Palermo, while Giuseppe Damiani Almeyda’s design came fourth. The Mayor, Salesio Balsano, made a point of informing Basile of the competition’s result and offering his congratulations. A period of waiting followed, also owing to ambiguity in the competition brief, which stipulated that all five winning designs would remain municipal property and that the city council would choose which one to complete. The foundation stone was laid on 12 January 1875, the anniversary of the 1848 Sicilian revolution, in Piazza Giuseppe Verdi, in the presence of all the city’s leading authorities and with a speech by Baron Nicolò Turrisi Colonna. Work was suspended in 1878 and resumed in 1890, with the aim of completing it in time for the following year’s exhibition. It remained under the direction of Giovan Battista Filippo Basile, who died a few months later, on 16 June 1891. He was succeeded by his son Ernesto, also an architect, who agreed, at the request of the Municipality of Palermo, to finish his father’s work in progress and complete the drawings needed to continue construction of the Theatre. The Theatre opened on 16 May 1897 with Giuseppe Verdi’s Falstaff, an opera never before performed in Palermo, conducted by Leopoldo Mugnone. Ticket prices ranged from 80 lire for second-tier boxes to 3 lire for the gallery. At the time of its opening, Teatro Massimo, with an area of 7730 square metres, was Europe’s third-largest theatre, surpassed only by the opera houses of Paris and Vienna. The two bronze groups of lions flanking the majestic staircase depict Tragedy, by Benedetto Civiletti, and Opera, by Mario Rutelli, who also created the quadriga atop the Politeama Garibaldi. At the top of the staircase, a pronaos with six Corinthian columns welcomes visitors. The frieze above bears the inscription: “Art renews peoples and reveals their life. The pleasure of the stage is in vain if it does not aim to prepare the future”. The dome above the auditorium has a diameter of 28,732 metres and consists of an iron structure covered with bronze scales, topped by a large vase, also inspired by Corinthian forms. Antonio Ugo sculpted the busts of Giuseppe Verdi and Giovanni Battista Filippo Basile, while several sculptural reliefs are by Salvatore Valenti. The painters who decorated the Theatre’s rooms include Ettore De Maria, Michele Corteggiani, Luigi Di Giovanni, Rocco Lentini, Giuseppe Enea and Enrico Cavallaro; Giuseppe Sciuti depicted the procession for the coronation of Roger II on the large decorated curtain. During its first decades, the theatre was run by private companies, often different from one year to the next, until 1935, when a decree by the Minister of Popular Culture declared it an autonomous theatre institution. The following year it adopted the official name Ente Autonomo Teatro Massimo di Palermo. In 1974, the Theatre closed for renovation work, which continued until 12 May 1997, when it reopened with a concert conducted in the first half by Franco Mannino and in the second half by Claudio Abbado with the Berliner Philharmoniker.
